What Are Custom Games?

Custom games on Player Benchmark let you create private lobbies and play multiplayer brain games on your own terms. Unlike ranked and unranked matchmaking where you're paired with random opponents, custom games give you full control — choose your game mode, set the match format (1v1, team, or free-for-all), invite friends with a simple 6-character lobby code, and start playing whenever you're ready. There's no ELO on the line, no matchmaking queue, and no time pressure. Custom lobbies are perfect for playing with friends, hosting game nights, running informal competitions, or just practicing specific games against people you know.

How to Create a Lobby

Creating a custom lobby takes seconds. Click "Create Lobby" and you'll become the host with full control over game settings. Choose which game mode to play — from Reaction Time and Typing Speed to Tank Battle, Speed Sudoku, Dots & Boxes, and Infinite Tic Tac Toe. Select the match format: 1v1 for head-to-head duels, Team for 2v2 or larger team matches, or Free-for-All (FFA) for everyone-versus-everyone competitions with up to 8 players. Once created, you'll receive a unique lobby code that you can share with anyone. Players join by entering the code — no friend request or account required.

How to Join a Lobby

Joining a custom lobby is just as easy. Click "Join Lobby" and enter the 6-character code shared by the host. You can also join directly via a URL — the host can share a link like playerbenchmark.com/custom/ABC123 and anyone who opens it will automatically join the lobby. Guests without accounts are welcome too — you'll be prompted to enter a display name and then you're in. The host controls when the game starts, so everyone has time to join and get settled before the match begins.

Available Game Modes

Custom games support all 13 multiplayer game modes on Player Benchmark. Skill-based games include Reaction Time (click speed), Typing Speed (WPM racing), Aim Trainer (target accuracy), Math Test (number processing), and Click Speed (stimulus response). Strategy games include Tank Battle (real-time tactical combat with ricochet physics), Speed Sudoku (competitive puzzle solving), Dots & Boxes (territory control), and Infinite Tic Tac Toe (3x3 board where your oldest piece disappears on your 4th placement). Each game mode offers a different type of challenge, so custom lobbies let you curate the experience — play your group's favorite game repeatedly, or rotate through different modes each round for maximum variety.

Match Formats: 1v1, Team, and FFA

Custom lobbies support three match formats to suit any group size. 1v1 puts two players head-to-head in a direct duel — ideal for settling rivalries or focused practice against a specific friend. Team mode splits players into two teams that compete with combined scores — great for cooperative competition where teammates complement each other's strengths. Free-for-All (FFA) pits everyone against everyone with up to 8 players in a single lobby — perfect for game nights, parties, or large group competitions where one player emerges as the ultimate champion. The host can change the game mode and format between rounds, keeping the session dynamic and fresh.

Host Controls and Settings

As the lobby host, you have full control over the game experience. Choose which game mode to play, set the match format, decide the maximum number of players, and start the game when everyone is ready. Between rounds, you can switch to a different game mode or format without creating a new lobby — keep the same group together and rotate through as many games as you want. The host can also kick players if needed and manage the overall flow of the session. This level of control makes custom lobbies perfect for organized events, classroom activities, team-building exercises, or structured game nights.

Guest Access — No Account Required

One of the best features of custom games is that anyone can join without creating an account. Share the lobby code or direct URL with friends, and they can start playing immediately as a guest. This makes custom games incredibly accessible — there's no sign-up barrier, no email verification, and no waiting. Just enter a display name, join the lobby, and you're competing in seconds. This is especially useful for casual game sessions where not everyone wants to commit to creating an account, or for sharing with people who are trying Player Benchmark for the first time.

Use Cases for Custom Games

Custom lobbies are incredibly versatile. Friend groups use them for regular game nights — create a lobby, share the code in your Discord or group chat, and compete across multiple rounds of brain games. Content creators use them for viewer participation events — share the lobby code on stream and let fans join for live competitive matches. Teachers and educators use them as engaging classroom activities that test cognitive skills like memory, reaction time, and problem solving. Teams and companies use them for fun team-building exercises that challenge different mental abilities. Competitive players use them to practice specific games against friends at a similar skill level. Whatever your use case, custom lobbies provide the flexibility to create exactly the gaming experience you want.

How many players can join a custom lobby?+

Custom lobbies support up to 8 players in Free-for-All mode. 1v1 mode supports 2 players, and team mode splits players into two equal teams. The host sets the maximum player count when creating the lobby.

Do custom games affect my ELO or rank?+

No. Custom games are completely separate from ranked matchmaking. Your ELO, rank, and placement progress are never affected by custom lobby matches. Play as many custom games as you want with zero impact on your competitive standing.

Can guests create lobbies or only join them?+

Guests can both create and join custom lobbies. No account is needed for any custom game functionality — just enter a display name and start hosting or playing.

Can I change the game mode between rounds?+

Yes! The host can switch to a different game mode and match format between rounds without creating a new lobby. The same group stays together and you can play as many different games as you want in one session.

How do I share a lobby with friends?+

You can share the 6-character lobby code for friends to enter manually, or share the direct URL (playerbenchmark.com/custom/CODE) which auto-joins them when opened. Both methods work for guests and registered users alike.

What happens if the host disconnects?+

If the host disconnects during a game, the match continues. If the host disconnects in the lobby, a new host may be assigned automatically. Players can always create a new lobby and share the fresh code if the session is disrupted.
